What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic devices that replace missing teeth. They can replace some of your teeth or all of them. Many types of dentures are removable, while others bond to fixed devices in your mouth. Are there different types of dentures?

The most common types of dentures are:

Full dentures

Full dentures, which replace all your teeth, are ideal for individuals with no healthy teeth left. Full dentures include artificial teeth attached to a pink acrylic base that mimics the look and feel of your natural gums. They cover the roof of your mouth and suction to your gums to form a tight seal.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures can replace some of your teeth. The team may place a partial denture if the majority of your teeth are still healthy. While these restorations consist of artificial teeth and a gum-like base, they don’t cover the roof of your mouth or suction to your gums. Instead, partial dentures attach to metal or ceramic framework that adheres to your adjacent teeth.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures connect to dental implants (screw-like restorations) that replace your natural tooth roots. The team surgically inserts implants into your jawbone, allowing them to integrate with your mouth. Dental implants provide a stable foundation for dentures that can prevent shifting.

What is the process for dentures?

Once you decide to move forward with getting dentures, the team at Federal Way Dental takes digital X-rays and measurements of your mouth. They send your scans to an outside lab, which creates your custom-made dentures. Then, the team builds a wax mold to ensure the proper fit. 

When your dentures arrive, the team can make any necessary adjustments to make sure your prosthetics feel comfortable and secure. 

They may also provide detailed care instructions to help you get the most out of your dentures. Depending on the type of dentures you have, the team may recommend:

• Cleaning your dentures daily
• Soaking your dentures at night
• Brushing your gums regularly
• Investing in a soft-bristled toothbrush
